Stark Museum of Art

Explore Stark Museum of Art which has America's most significant collections of American Western art. The museum is founded by the Starks...H.J. Lutcher Stark and his mother, Miriam Lutcher Stark whose passion into collecting American West art and vision led into creating this superb museum.

The museum holds most of the significant collection of all time. These are :

• Western Art collection. The finest collections of 19th and 20th century Western American art and artifacts in the country are found at the Stark Museum of Art. This collection focuses on the stunning land, dramatic people, and diverse wildlife of the American West.

• The Decorative arts of the museum is a collection which is primarily of glasses and porcelain which included numerous items from Steuben Glass, the only complete set of The United States in Crystal, a series of bowls engraved with scenes representing each of the 50 states as well as Puerto Rico and the Union. The Stark Museum of Art collection holds the entire series as well as some duplicates, including unpainted versions.

• The American Indian collection consists of objects created by members of the tribes of the Great Plains, Southwest, Eastern Woodlands and Northwest Coast. The collection includes excellent examples of Plains clothing, body ornaments, and beadwork, such as elaborately beaded moccasins.

• The Rare Books and Manuscripts collection includes The Birds of America by naturalist John James Audubon. These five double elephant folios, which depict the birds of North America, belonged to the artist. The groundbreaking publication is widely regarded as one of the finest illustrated books of all time

These collections are really awesome. I am proud of those individuals whom by passion took care of these for years.

Along with the museum, a foundation was also established for charitable and educational purposes. Founded on 1961 by H.J. Lutcher Stark and his wife, Nelda C. Stark. Stark Foundation's mission is to improve the quality of life in Southeast Texas by encouraging, promoting and assisting education, the arts, and health and human services.
